Definition

Helenalin ist ein natürliches Sesquiterpen-Lacton mit antiphlogistischer und antitumoröser Wirkung das in Arnikaarten (Arnica chamissonis, Arnica montana) und anderen Asteraceae (Große Kapuzinerkresse, Echter Alant)  vorkommt.
Helenalin hemmt selektiv den Transkriptionsfaktor NF-κB. In vitro erweist sich Helenin als Inhibitor der Telomerase-Gen-Expression; weiterhin zeigt die Substanz eine anti-trypanosomale und antimikrobielle Aktivität. Experimentell hemmt die Substanz die Melaninproduktion in Melanozyten.   
Helenalin ist stark giftig und verfügt über eine erhebliche allergenische Potenz. Helenalin ist die eigentliche Ursache der Arnikaensibilisierungen (s.u. Arnika), wirkt in höhren Dosen herztoxisch.
