Immunologisches Phänomen das vor 20 Jahren von Miller in Tiermodellen gezeigt werden konnte. Das Phänomen basiert auf der Beobachtung dass die Immunantwort bei den meisten Autoimmunerkrankungen mit zunehmender Gewebeschädigung von einem Antigen zu einem anderen wechseln kann. Epitope spreading wird auch bei viralen Infekten (HPV-Infektionen) vermutet.
