Definition

Erythrosin ist ein roter, synthetischer, im sauren Milieu kirschroter Lebensmittelzusatzstoff (zur Gruppe der Xanthenfarbstoffe zugehörig), der in Wasser und Ethanol löslich ist. Im alkalischen Milieu färbt sich die Substanz gelb-braun.

Allgemeine Information

Die Verwendung ist im Lebensmittel-und Kosmetik-und Arzneimittelbereich nur eingeschränkt zulässig: bei Cocktailkirschen, Kosmetika (häufig bei Lippenstiften), als Farbe für Ostereier sowie als Arzneimittelzusatzstoff bei der Einfärbung von Drageeüberzügen von Arzneimitteln. 

Vorkommen

Erythrosin ist stark iodhaltig (mögliche Beeinflussung der Schilddrüsenfunktion!). Der Eingriff in die Schilddrüsenfunktion soll z. B. unkontrollierte Impulsivität von hyperaktiven Kindern auslösen können.

Erthrosin ist photosensibel und wirkt bei Wellenlängen von 532nm über einen photodynamischen Effekt antibakteriell und antimykotisch.

Erythrosin wird als Zahnplaque-Indikator zur Sichtbarmachung von mikrobiellen Plaques eingesetzt; weiterhin als Gallenblasen-Kontrastmittel.
